Well, what can I say at an event like this?

Well, what can I say at an event like this?
Welcome; good to see you, good to have known you, thanks for coming

By convention, this all sounds bazaar
Yet, this is my last chance to communicate with you, be you my dearest, my nearest, family or friend, or indeed, whoever you are

The final event accompanying my life is of course that when I expire
Traditionally when we come together, amidst gloom and sullen attire

So here we are and, again, welcome, I know how many of you feel
Having myself stood where you are, the reality of things seems so surreal

It can be a somber occasion, forlorn, upsetting and sad
But that is not what I want at this memorial, instead I’d like you to be glad

Of the joy I brought to your life, making a difference in a positive way
Of the good times we had together and the love that we shared night and day

Of the times we laughed together and the family occasions, birthdays and more
When we were there for each other in the bad times and cared for each other, rich or poor

Well, what more can I say at an event like this, I’ve taken enough of your time
If nothing else, perhaps I’ve brought a smile to your face, by my writing, in verses, which rhyme
